Easter is a special time in the christian calendar. The village of Canillas prepares her “Santos“, (statues of the saints). They are cleaned and polished, dressed in beautiful fabrics and adorned with the most spectacular arrangements of flowers, they invite spring into the heart.

The celebration begins with the first Mass and procession; ”Domingo de las Ramos“. Palm Sunday is followed by holy week when each day a mass is called by the toll of the bell of the church in the plaza, ”Nuestra Señora de la Expectacion”. On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, the mass is followed by a traditional procession, all leading up to and culminating in the celebrations of Easter Sunday; Domingo de la Ressurreccion. At mid morning announced by the toll of the bell, a special mass is celebrated and a grand and beautiful processionb then follows.

The intimate village celebration of Semana Santa (holy week) welcomes all neighbours and visitors to celebrate together the “Ressurreccion de Nuestro Señor Jesus Christ“. (The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ).
